Background

A decade ago, the Hong Kong toy industry re-focused its direction to producing more products for this market with the addition of creative designs and functions. In this way, the actual manufacturing process of toys became more diversified. There was a significant increase in the actual design and production of items in Hong Kong. This creates a need to find, recruit and educate creative individuals and young talent, and guide them to the toy industry.

In recent times, Hong Kong toy exports have been declining which has created a knock-on effect in the manufacture of traditional items which was always a bedrock for the industry. Currently, there is extreme pressure on toy designers to look for changes, make more new and original designs and overall upgrade the industry. With Hong Kong transforming towards a design and innovation hub, the whole industry is now in dire need of new blood to bring novelty. Hence, this is a unique opportunity to attract students and designers to the industry.

My Toy Design Competition 2014-15 is the second Toy Design Competition jointly organised by the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Federation of Hong Kong Industries, Hong Kong Toys Council and The Toys Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong Limited, funded by CreateSmart Initiative of Create Hong Kong, HKSAR Government and supported by various local toy companies and associations.
“My Toy” represents your creation of a new toy. This name highlights the importance of intellectual property and your creativity.

Registration for My Toy Design Competition 2014-15 is now open until 31 October 2014. We invite full-time students and individual designers to participate and submit creative and innovative toy designs. Please click here for more details.
